Taking Water Samples -- Well and Septic Testing

A well and septic test is required for the sale of a home. Well and septic evaluations should be conducted by the local county health department (required for FHA/VA loans) or by an Illinois licensed environmental health practitioner in accordance with local health department requirements. Homeowners, whether on city water or well, may have their drinking water tested anytime.

Homeowner procedures for taking water samples to be used for the purpose of bacteriological analysis as outlined by the Boone County Department of Public Health:

1. Obtain only raw water -- not through a water softener. The sample is to represent the water in the well, not piping or water equipment.

2. If at all possible, select an easily accessible faucet located on the cold water line. DO NOT use the cold water from hot and cold mixing faucets unless no single cold water faucets are available.

3. Remove all removable faucet parts, such as purifiers, filter screens or washers. Open the faucet carefully to permit the water to run slowly enough to prevent splashing. Allow the water to run for 5 minutes before sampling. Shut off water and swab the inside of the spigot with alcohol wipes. Then swab the outside of the spigot with a new alcohol wipe. Be careful to not contaminate the spigot, bottle, or water sample.

4. Remove the cap from sampling bottle, being CAREFUL not to touch the inside of the cap or the top of the bottle. DO NOT SET THE CAP DOWN! Be careful while sampling to not contaminate the water sample while it is being taken. Fill the bottle to the neck.

5. Replace the cap tightly. Record sample location on lid only if you have more than one sample. Return the sample(s) to the County Health Department for analysis.

 +  Water and Septic Testing

Water samples must be taken in sterile containers obtained from the County Health Department. Refrigerate the water sample until it is brought in for analysis. Take precautions to avoid contamination of the bottle and water sample.

If chlorination of a well is necessary the process usually takes 12 hours and water should not be run during that time. Check with your County Health Department. Water will need to be re-tested after chlorination.

Testing of the septic system should be done by professional Illinois licensed environmental health practitioner or local county health department, as required. If you have a private septic company do the testing, you may want to consider having the septic tank cleaned while being tested and check how often they suggest cleaning for your system (usually every 2 to 5 years).
