COMPARING
NURSING HOME QUALITIES

COMPARING HOSPITALS, HOME HEALTH AGENCIES, PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAMS, CARE PROVIDERS
AND SENIOR CARE PLANNING TIPS

This government website will allow you to get an indication of the quality of about 19 nursing homes in Winnebago County, three in Boone, six in Ogle, and five in Stephenson plus 17,000 nursing homes in the United States.

www.medicare.gov
www.medicare.gov/nhcompare
or call 800-MEDICARE

This site contains information on such topics involving nursing homes as the prevalence of physical restraints at a facility or its percentage of residents with bed sores. Information is a compilation of deficiencies found during annual inspections and complaint investigations and lists ten quality issues you should be aware of.

This information should not be the final factor in deciding whether to use a particular nursing home. Each nursing home listing shows how it performs on various quality issues compared with state and national averages. Some of these ratings may be based only on one inspection and may not really reflect what the facility is like. Although the site lists 10 quality issues, some nursing homes do not have information for all of them. Families exploring nursing homes should seek more information by visiting the facility, talking to residents, and getting information from the long-term care ombudsman's office in each state.

The figures shown on this site do not rank nursing homes or give enough of a picture on their own to help evaluate a facility. It does, however, arm you with some basic information and alert you to some of the questions you need to ask about nursing homes.

Seniors and driving. Helpful information on what risks to watch out for along with tips on advising loved ones that they may not be capable of driving anymore can be found at http://www.carinsurance.org/senior-driving-safety.

If someone should not be driving anymore but refuses to stop, family members can ask the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for help. Some states - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina - accept letters from doctors, lawyers, or family members about drivers whose medical conditions may make it unsafe for them to be on the road. Contact your local DMV for information. (Driving is often a touchy issue with seniors and they may not be aware of diminished capabilities, or just not willing to accept it -- you will remain anonymous). The DMV may send a letter to the person, perhaps requiring them to take a driving test and/or provide a doctor's note. The DMV may also encourage them to learn how to compensate for vision loss, slowing reflexes, and other consequences of aging thru AARP's 55 Alive Driver Safety Program at www.aarp.org/drive/home.html.

Tax breaks for caregiving. If you support one or more of your parents financially, no matter how far apart you live, the IRS may allow you to claim him or her as a dependent and save on your taxes. To qualify you must pay more than 50% of their expenses. For more information, see IRS Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, Table 3-1. www.irs.gov
