ROCKFORD'S EDUCATIONAL
CHOICES
The Rockford area offers a wide variety of educational choices for people of
all ages, incomes and educational backgrounds, whether it's opportunities in
pre-school, public and private school, technical training, career
advancement, GEDs, adult education or simply life enrichment. The region
offers access to four four-year colleges, three community colleges, a
business college, a nursing school and a medical school. The Rockford Public
Schools educates more than 27,000 students in a 170-square-mile territory
and offers special programs focusing on various students' needs.
The highly-regarded University of Illinois School of Medicine at Rockford has led the nation for years in certain areas, even outpacing schools like the Harvard School of Medicine. Offering training in primary care, family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and other medical specialties, and an extremely successful rural medicine program. Four years ago, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Foundation's "2000 Primary Care Scorecard" ranked the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford as the No. 1 (out of 146) U.S. allopathic medical school graduating physicians into primary care specialties in 1999.

THE REGION
The Chicago/Rockford International Airport is located 65 miles northwest of O'Hare
International Airport in Chicago. The airport has ranked as the 23rd most
active cargo airport in the country and is United Parcel Service's
second-largest air hub. Adding to the growth potential of the region, 25
miles south of Rockford and 75 miles west of Chicago is the Rochelle Union
Pacific Railroad's newest intermodal hub with a projected annual capacity to
handle more than 720,000 over-the-road trailers or ocean-going containers.
Already excelling in cargo transportation, the Rockford airport is also
growing as a passenger service option for the 2.2 million people living and
working within an easy drive of its borders who are finding our airport to
be a friendly and more convenient alternative. It's often been said that, no matter where you are in
the Rockford area, you're only 20 minutes from everything. For longer
distances to Chicago and Wisconsin, Interstate 90 and 39 run thru Rockford
and make an easy task of traveling and commuting by car.
